Car Hire Cairns
Cairns is easy to navigate, but how you choose to get around will shape your stay.
One of the most common questions we’re asked is:

The answer depends on how you want to experience this part of Far North Queensland.

Staying in Cairns City? You may not need a car
If your plans centre around:the Esplanadelagoon swimsrestaurants and cafesreef tours departing from the marina…then you can comfortably get by without a car. Most tours include transfers, and the city itself is flat, walkable, and easy to navigate. Taxis and rideshare are readily available for short distances.Best for: short stays, relaxed itineraries, reef-focused trips
Want to explore beyond the city? You’ll want a car
This is where Cairns really opens up. Some of the most memorable experiences lie just outside the city:Palm Cove’s quiet, palm-lined shorelinethe coastal drive to Port Douglashidden beaches along Trinity Inletthe Daintree RainforestWhile tours can take you there, having your own car gives you something else entirely, freedom to move slowly, to stop when something catches your eye, to shape the day as it unfolds.Best for: longer stays, couples, families, slower travel
Public transport vs car hire
Public transport exists, but it’s limited. Buses run between Cairns, the northern beaches, and some key hubs, but services can be infrequent, travel times are longer and flexibility is minimal. If you’re staying in places like Redlynch, Palm Cove, Clifton Beach, or Trinity Beach, a car becomes far more valuable.
When we recommend hiring a car
You’ll get the most out of a car if:
You’re staying more than 3–4 nights, your accommodation is outside the CBD, you plan to visit multiple locations, you prefer flexibility over fixed tour schedules.
A simple way to decide. If your trip looks like:
Reef + relax → no car needed
Explore + discover → hire a car
A final note from us
There’s no single right way to experience Cairns. Some guests arrive, settle in, and let the days unfold slowly between the reef and the pool. Others take to the road, chasing quiet beaches and long lunches under the palms. Both are equally beautiful. If you’re unsure what suits your stay, we’re always here to help guide you.
